IdeasTap Photographic Award - Mothers of the Believers
‘Mothers of the Believers’ is an Investigation into a 3rd generation Muslim living in Britain. Created with a body of current and family photographs arranged with family documentation that utilise the underlying narrative of a life and the identity of a Western Muslim living in the United Kingdom, post 9/11 and 7/7.
An introspective look into two very different Countries (United Kingdom and Pakistan) each with their own ideological and social/cultural distinctions and all of that being mixed into one individual. A British Pakistani.
Being born and raised in Bradford with a healthy population of many Muslims there has never been an immediate danger of threat/death and/or destruction even with the advent of 7/7 and going to school the next day.
Rather it’s been a question of personal identity. Thoughts that befalls everyone at one stage or another. A born British man but endowed with a foreign culture as a Pakistani begs the question, where does being British begin and being Muslim end?
